The Grapevine

Yesterday i was out to dinner with a co-worker, we were chatting about work ethic, I was mentioning that I have a hard time working with people that don’t have any. And most of the time i say something to them about it, in a round about way, I try to encourage, or I’ll give you something to do, or ill flat out say something. When your on a crew, everybody has to pull their own weight, the camera guy, the led tech, director, the list goes on, if your done with your gig, move on to the next to help out the other guy on your crew.

Then he says “that’s funny because all the guys you’re describing (no names were mentioned… sorta) don’t like you”. Wait… They don’t like me? I like them, I just don’t think they have any work ethic.

I think that’s funny, because I mean I don’t get that from any of my co-workers, if they don’t like me that’s fine, the part that gets me is how well their hiding it, I know that there are people who don’t like me, you can tell how they talk to me or debate every decision I make. There’s people I don’t like, and some times i can be a jerk, like that guy from the roofing company, every time i do a gig with that guy I try to make his life miserable, is that Christian? No and I’m working on that, as soon as I ruin his career.

I know that’s just part of life not everyone is going to like me, and especially being the type of guy that wants to be in the leadership position, you’re going to have people not like you. It just hit me though because this is the first time I have ever heard that co-workers don’t like me.

Or maybe he meant hypothetically…

It was in Spanish

Last night I did one of the bazaarist but fun shows. A few weeks ago, we had a guy swing by the shop that wanted to rent some video gear, so I talked to him, kinda figured out what he wanted (he didn’t speak very good English) gave him a quote and didn’t hear back from him for a couple weeks. Then out of the blue I start getting calls from him and his boss about renting the gear.

The show was yesterday, load in was at 8am the show was suppose to be at 8pm, that later turned into 1130pm when the headliner went on, I’m getting to that. It was a pretty simple LED setup and even easier camera package, even with the simpleness of the show, I still needed crew, I was able to acquire the services my friends, what I like to call the A-Team, not just because their amazing at they do, but also because like the A-team in the tv show, we’re always doing shows that turn out to be a little unorthodox, you know the shows, when you show up, and you’re given tool shed to do a show in, but we always make the show happen and the client happy.

That and the shows themselves are a little different, for example last night, the entire show was in Spanish, and we (the video crew) don’t speak a lick of Spanish except for “¿dónde está el cuarto de baño” (Where’s the Bathroom?), which I learned doing shows in South America, having drank the water there, I was, for the first week in need of a bathroom frequently, it was essential for survival.

(Sorry the picture is blurry, all I had was my phone)

The artist last night we were there for to do was Pedro Fernandez. Like I said we had heard that the show was suppose to be at 8pm, well there was a mariachi band with a tuba on stage at 8pm, which that was the first time I had ever done a show where there was a tuba, then we hear that we don’t need to be on camera till 10:30pm, holy crap 10:30? The girl that was on stage, opening for Mr. Fernandez went right on by the 10:30pm mark, and since the entire show was in Spanish, (the only song that happen the entire night that we understood was when the headliner started playing “Thank God I’m a country boy” by John Denver … in Spanish) we weren’t really sure what was going on, the one thing that I was sure of was that I really wanted some chips and salsa, now 11:30pm(ish) a large band of bull fighters came on the stage, there were like 6 violin players, and 4 guitar players, but non of the guitars were the same size, one was really small, one really big, one missing strings, and one had more strings than there should be, I think the rock industry could learn from this, they started playing some pretty cool music, which we started running camera, but not really knowing what Mr. Fernandez looks like, we started with the older gentlemen that was singing at first, yea… he wasn’t the right guy.

Finally the right guy came on the stage, and that’s when it happen, the crowd bum rushed the stage, the artist started with the hip shaking/thrusting, the butt clinching, I threw up in my mouth a little, and the underwear started flying from the crowd. All the while here’s me, a redheaded gringo up front pointing a camera at this guy, dodging bra’s and trying to follow a guy that is hip shaking from one side of the stage to the other.

It had to be one of the funnest shows I’ve done in a while, we laughed so much talking on com and seeing things that we’re just not use to seeing at shows, I don’t think I had a camera shot that was rock steady all night because I was laughing so much.

My wife has been little miss bakes a lot, and i love it! She recently hosted a baby shower for a friend of hers, which is a lot of work i found out, all the planning, inviting of people she doesn’t know, creating a list of games, decorations, food, then getting all the supplies, shopping for the supplies, because that crap can get pricey, getting the food, then making all the food, while trying to keep things clean for when the guests show up.

And then not only was she doing this, but working all the while, and then she had some friends of hers and the babies momma, stay with us, that entails cleaning parts of the house that wouldn’t need to be cleaned just to have some people over for a baby thing.

I don’t know much about anything that has to do with much, but to me thats all amazing stuff, I’m super proud of her, she did an amazing job, i think she needs to start a business throwing showers for people, she’s so good at it.

The Road

Here lately I’ve been doing a lot of reading and listening to what’s going on in peoples lives.  One of the things that seems to be a reoccurring theme is getting off the road, a lot of my friends, guys that I’ve toured with, done a lot shows with, are calling it quits for the road life, I mean we all talk about it, we all sit around and talk about starting a lawn mowing company, or becoming a garbage man, but that’s usually when the show we’re doing is… well sucks.

But non of us actually go through with it, mainly because we love what we do, we love to hate the artists, we love the working all day with no thank you’s, we love the crowd spilling drinks on my shoe while running camera, there’s something about the life of a roadie that keeps you sucked in.  Yet so many GOOD tech’s are getting off the road, some are just burned out, some are tired of the “industry” and the way your treated, some… I don’t know the reasoning, but it makes me sad.

Some of these guys getting off the road, make me want to get off the road, the camaraderie that we had, you can’t replace, the work ethic they had, you can’t replace, and to be honest, you can’t teach, they were able to wear the work hat and the friend hat with no problem juggling the two, just good people is what they are, and I’m glad that I was able to work with them and be able to call them friends.
