Day Off

The other day some of us crew had the opportunity to go to a AAA baseball game, it was our day off, and we thought there’s nothing better than to go to a baseball game on our day off, it could be high school baseball for all we care, baseball is baseball, the game started at 11am so we had to do some talking to the drivers and other people, to get them to hurry up with load out that night before, and it was a long drive so we talked our driver into leaving as soon as we were done, being that he’s a good guy he obliged, we showed up at 1030am, and was two blocks from “Bricktown Ballpark”, you can’t get better timing than that.

You can’t ask for a better day off, baseball, peanuts, souvenir cups that cost $8 full of Mt. Dew, and hotdogs. Oh and we sat behind home plate, yea there was nobody there, but we still felt special, and it was easier to heckle the visiting team, and all the scouts there watching the players.

Patti’s Show.

Yep that’s my wife, she was able to come to one of our shows, she was visiting her best friend, and it so happened that where her best friend lived wasn’t far from where we were doing a show, so they decided to come over and hang out with us.  It was awesome, I love spending time with her!   She took over the robo’s, she was like “look out, let someone that’s good at controlling things step in there”,  OK she didn’t really say that, but it sounds like something she would say.  I later learned that the guys would rather have her than me.  The word was Culmer’s fired Patti’s hired.

Pictures from Vegas

So it’s been a while since I’ve done a good ole fashion picture blog with some short stories, starting with what we did all day at the venue on Sunday, after loading in we got a lot of people to play some wiffle ball!  we were in a small area of the loading dock, and kept adding players when someone would walk by they would jump in, until we had like 10 to 15 people playing on each team, it was a ton of fun.

Following the show we went out to try and find some food, we succeeded, a little P.F. Chang’s at midnight on the strip, yea that’s right.

The Strip

Where we stayed.

Us heading back to the hotel after walking around for most of the night/morning.

And just for the record I was “up”, if you know what that means when it comes to playing some cards or slots. It was fun.

And then there was going to see Mystere, my friend Sam and I were able to go and see the Cirque Du Soleil show, I hadn’t seen a “Vegas” show, all the times I’ve passed through, but this time I was able to actually go, and it was AWESOME!!! I love Cirque shows, this one was the first to come to Vegas and I loved it.    Big thanks to Sam for taking me, I love that guy.

Back to Work

Yesterday was the first day back to work from the Easter break, we happen to be in a place that I hadn’t been too in a long time, the venue is awful but the surroundings are really nice, I had done many a show back in the day at this venue, so I knew what was around the area pretty well, so we walked around outside and took some pictures of the things that are close by.  In my trying to get back into taking more pictures.  It was a good day.

The ship above is the Queen Mary II, the first time I did a show at the venue we were in, I was there for a week, and the group I was with booked everybody in the super nice hotel next door, (the Westin) and stuck the only lighting guy, (me) on a boat that I had to take a bus to get too.  No internet, I smelled like sea water after showering, and the beds were pretty much the size of a cot.  And it was awesome, I was pretty mad at first but an experience that was amazing.  So many stories just from the week I stayed on the boat or is it a ship?

One more

Yesterday I had the opportunity to do a show where the legendary band Stillwater played. It was pretty awesome.

Today is the last show on this little tour I’m on, it’ll be the last time I hear people yell at the band to play free bird, and then actually hear it be played.

I’ve learned so much on this tour, as you may get from my last post, I haven’t exactly been excited about the crew out here, but it’s been a good learning experience. I don’t want to go into to much of what I’ve learned because I have to get through the day yet.

Random

So it’s been pointed out to me, that here lately my posts have been random or without a point, so I thought well maybe you need a point, but I don’t, that’s how I do things. (haha) But seriously I went back and read a couple posts, some have points, and some.. Not even close, the posts bounce around from here to there, and there’s for sure a lot of randomness.   I’ve never been one to write something and actually have a point, that’s why I call it “second thought’s… more like rambling” I mean there has to be a reason for the scatter brain thoughts, right?

So here’s a good excuse.  I got to thinking about the last week or two, and the things that have ensued, and I’ve realized that I’ve tried to write a post through the course of the whole day and sometimes multiple days, saving and then getting back to it later.  Well that didn’t work out so well, it just made things even more random, because as apposed to just posting something, I would go back and filter the rants, or think the post was boring, then change things up.  It’s a lame excuse but I think a good one.

Pictures

A couple days ago I had a post all done about picture taking, and people that take pictures (still have a hobby) that upset me, some of you right now are thinking “no… Somebody upset Culmer?!” And to you I say, hey!  Shut up.  I had saved it as a draft in a crummy app that was suppose to “help” me post to my blog from my phone so I didn’t have to always pull my computer out, it was suppose to make being a blogger easy, it didn’t, but thankfully the app mysteriously deleted part of the post or rant.

So it was never posted, the post (rant) was about how I’ve hit a wall with my hobbies, one of my hobbies is photography, I use to be all about it, I love taking pictures, not so much portraits, but in the moment shots, like show shots or people doing things, I love catching moments in life and putting them together to tell stories.  I’m not one to go around showing off my skills, or really has much invested into the hobby, and one of my frustrations is with people that have everything, and don’t put any effort into learning about the skill, or people that get things handed to them, and are ungrateful, I still have the same camera I’ve had for four years, it’s not that I’m all of sudden wanting somebody to pay attention to me, I don’t want to be the cool kid, sure it makes you feel better when people leave you a comment, or tell you something nice verbally, for those of who remember what having a real conversation is, or in my case after being on the road for a bit what “affirmation” is, that’s something that doesn’t happen much.  But as I was ranting about this to a guy that has given me a chance to take some pictures of him and his band in live studio moment, which was an awesome experience, he said that my problem was that I don’t let people know that this is what I love to do, I love capturing a moment in life that is real, there’s no green screen, no setup with fancy crap everywhere, not a whole lot of photoshop, (can’t afford it) just life, like him in the studio, he wanted shots of their experience in the studio, I’m not saying I did a good job, but I was able to catch the moments they wanted, and I loved it.

So what he suggested was, to add a page on my blog, a blog that he has never seen or even heard of until the other day, (I’ve known him for years, again I don’t do very well with self promotion) of the pictures that I’ve taken, I know people that have these pages, I guess the reason I never had one before is I didn’t want to come across as someone who copies other peoples ideas, or again I’m not big about bragging myself up, and what’s the point nowadays anybody can take a picture and make it look awesome with something as simple as an app on their phone.

But I’m still giving it some thought.
