There are a lot of shows I’m proud of, there are a lot of shows I want to forget, I’m not sure which one this one falls into yet, I have so many stories, I have so many embarrassing moments, like yelling at the PM on the radio that a piece of our equipment is on fire and for him to bugger off, I didn’t really say bugger, but being that their from Australia it would have worked.

I have some pride in accomplishing this tour, it was one of the hardest tours I’ve been on, but yet it keeps creeping up in area’s of my life, and to top it off the one night of the tour that was the hardest for me, and one I would rather forget, is coming out on DVD.

Feb. 14 you can surprise your spouse with a romantic trip to Miami via a live DVD.

I’ve been getting into doing time lapses, I don’t have the cool kid toys yet, like a nice camera or a Go Pro, “yet”, but I do have an app that works for now. I’ve been doing some research to see what people do, the kinda of music they use, because I don’t want to get sued by some label etc., the kind of intervals they use, but mostly I want to see what it is that people time lapse, and to see if there’s any shows (concerts) out there time lapsing, there are a lot of the typical sun rises and sun sets, there are a lot of the typical riding in the car time lapses. As for the shows, there are some good load in / load out time lapses, very basic and fun to watch if it’s a big show, or if you were on the show, it’s always fun to see yourself running around in 5, 10, or 15 second intervals at 30fps, or maybe 24fps.

So I thought I would share a typical time lapse, in all the picture finding for work I’ve been doing, I ran across a couple time lapses that “we” (I have a couple from different tours and there were a lot of us involved) attempted to do, so here’s a load in from a Christmas tour I was on a couple…. a little more than a couple years ago.

I thought that I would share what I’ve been doing, why I haven’t returned some of your phone calls, it’s because I was on tour with a group that took up a lot of my time, the picture above, and that’s not photoshop, it’s just a huge freaking wall above the lady singing, the tour happen to happen right after a busy summer, where I got super sick while doing festivals, and it was right before I did the show that I have a pic of below this, it was a corporate gig that wasn’t necessarily a lot of work, I had an amazing crew on both shows it was just more work after being tired from a busy past couple months. And that’s it, what I’ve been up too.

Yesterday i was out to dinner with a co-worker, we were chatting about work ethic, I was mentioning that I have a hard time working with people that don’t have any. And most of the time i say something to them about it, in a round about way, I try to encourage, or I’ll give you something to do, or ill flat out say something. When your on a crew, everybody has to pull their own weight, the camera guy, the led tech, director, the list goes on, if your done with your gig, move on to the next to help out the other guy on your crew.

Then he says “that’s funny because all the guys you’re describing (no names were mentioned… sorta) don’t like you”. Wait… They don’t like me? I like them, I just don’t think they have any work ethic.

I think that’s funny, because I mean I don’t get that from any of my co-workers, if they don’t like me that’s fine, the part that gets me is how well their hiding it, I know that there are people who don’t like me, you can tell how they talk to me or debate every decision I make. There’s people I don’t like, and some times i can be a jerk, like that guy from the roofing company, every time i do a gig with that guy I try to make his life miserable, is that Christian? No and I’m working on that, as soon as I ruin his career.

I know that’s just part of life not everyone is going to like me, and especially being the type of guy that wants to be in the leadership position, you’re going to have people not like you. It just hit me though because this is the first time I have ever heard that co-workers don’t like me.

Or maybe he meant hypothetically…

Last night I did one of the bazaarist but fun shows. A few weeks ago, we had a guy swing by the shop that wanted to rent some video gear, so I talked to him, kinda figured out what he wanted (he didn’t speak very good English) gave him a quote and didn’t hear back from him for a couple weeks. Then out of the blue I start getting calls from him and his boss about renting the gear.

The show was yesterday, load in was at 8am the show was suppose to be at 8pm, that later turned into 1130pm when the headliner went on, I’m getting to that. It was a pretty simple LED setup and even easier camera package, even with the simpleness of the show, I still needed crew, I was able to acquire the services my friends, what I like to call the A-Team, not just because their amazing at they do, but also because like the A-team in the tv show, we’re always doing shows that turn out to be a little unorthodox, you know the shows, when you show up, and you’re given tool shed to do a show in, but we always make the show happen and the client happy.

That and the shows themselves are a little different, for example last night, the entire show was in Spanish, and we (the video crew) don’t speak a lick of Spanish except for “¿dónde está el cuarto de baño” (Where’s the Bathroom?), which I learned doing shows in South America, having drank the water there, I was, for the first week in need of a bathroom frequently, it was essential for survival.

(Sorry the picture is blurry, all I had was my phone)

The artist last night we were there for to do was Pedro Fernandez. Like I said we had heard that the show was suppose to be at 8pm, well there was a mariachi band with a tuba on stage at 8pm, which that was the first time I had ever done a show where there was a tuba, then we hear that we don’t need to be on camera till 10:30pm, holy crap 10:30? The girl that was on stage, opening for Mr. Fernandez went right on by the 10:30pm mark, and since the entire show was in Spanish, (the only song that happen the entire night that we understood was when the headliner started playing “Thank God I’m a country boy” by John Denver … in Spanish) we weren’t really sure what was going on, the one thing that I was sure of was that I really wanted some chips and salsa, now 11:30pm(ish) a large band of bull fighters came on the stage, there were like 6 violin players, and 4 guitar players, but non of the guitars were the same size, one was really small, one really big, one missing strings, and one had more strings than there should be, I think the rock industry could learn from this, they started playing some pretty cool music, which we started running camera, but not really knowing what Mr. Fernandez looks like, we started with the older gentlemen that was singing at first, yea… he wasn’t the right guy.

Finally the right guy came on the stage, and that’s when it happen, the crowd bum rushed the stage, the artist started with the hip shaking/thrusting, the butt clinching, I threw up in my mouth a little, and the underwear started flying from the crowd. All the while here’s me, a redheaded gringo up front pointing a camera at this guy, dodging bra’s and trying to follow a guy that is hip shaking from one side of the stage to the other.

It had to be one of the funnest shows I’ve done in a while, we laughed so much talking on com and seeing things that we’re just not use to seeing at shows, I don’t think I had a camera shot that was rock steady all night because I was laughing so much.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to do a show where the legendary band Stillwater played. It was pretty awesome.

Today is the last show on this little tour I’m on, it’ll be the last time I hear people yell at the band to play free bird, and then actually hear it be played.

I’ve learned so much on this tour, as you may get from my last post, I haven’t exactly been excited about the crew out here, but it’s been a good learning experience. I don’t want to go into to much of what I’ve learned because I have to get through the day yet.
